You can create tailored pricing strategies for different customers using default discounts, category-specific discounts, and product-specific discounts. These discounts can be set for different customer groups and allow fine-grained control over your pricing model.
Once you have added a customer group under Customers → Customer groups, you can set different discounts for them. These discounts always apply to all customers assigned to this customer group. For further information about customer groups, refer to Use customer groups.
Compared to other discounts, such as those from coupon campaigns, this discount is displayed in an additional column in the customer's basket and clearly indicates that it is their personal discount.
Note
Logged-in customers who are assigned to a customer group cannot use coupon codes. This ensures that a single customer does not receive multiple discounts.
Overview of customer group discounts
There are three different discount types that you can set for customer groups. Each discount type is useful for a different use case.
You can set:
Default discounts
Default discounts apply to all products on your website and are set as percentage discounts.
They are configured directly in the settings for a customer group and are ideal for giving a general discount to a specific group, such as wholesale buyers or loyal customers.
To set a default discount, go to Customers → Customer groups, select a group, activate the Set a default discount checkbox, and enter the percentage value.
Category-specific discounts
Category-specific discounts apply only to products within the discounted categories.
You can manage them in the Categories section of your cockpit once you have added at least one customer group. To do so, open a Category settings page and scroll down to the Category-specific discounts card.
Key behavior:
- If a product belongs to multiple discounted categories, the highest category-specific discount will be applied at checkout.
- Active category-specific discounts will override any default discounts.
- If 0% is set as the category-specific discount, customers in this group will not receive a discount on products in this category.
Example scenario
You have set the following for the "VIP Customers" group:
- 10% default discount
- 20% discount for the "Accessories" category
If a customer from the "VIP Customers“ group purchases products from the "Accessories“ category, they will receive a 20% discount on those products.
If any of those products are in a second category with a 15% discount for this group, the 20% will still apply, because it's the highest discount.
Product-specific discounts
Unlike category-specific discounts, which apply to entire product ranges, product-specific discounts allow you to set a discount for individual items.
You can manage them in the Products section of your cockpit once you have added at least one customer group. To do so, open the respective product settings page and go to the Customer group discounts card.
Key behavior:
- Product-specific discounts apply only to the respective products.
- Active product-specific discounts override both default and category-specific discounts.
- If 0% is specified as a product-specific discount, the respective customer group will not receive any discount on this product.
Note
When editing a product, the default discount of a customer group cannot be selected if the product is assigned to a category that has a category-specific discount for the same customer group. Category-specific discounts are defined at category level and have a higher priority than default discounts. Therefore, the default discount would not be applied to this product.
Example scenario:
You have set:
- 10% default discount for the "VIP Customers" group
- 20% discount on the "Accessories" category
- 5% discount on a handbag in the "Accessories" category
If a customer from the "VIP Customers“ group purchases the handbag, they will receive a 5% discount on that product.
If a customer purchases additional products for which no product-specific discount is specified, the 20% category-specific discount or the 10% default discount (depending on the categories of the purchased products) will apply for these products.
