Once you have grouped several products into a category, you can use the Editor in your cockpit to display the category on your website. Visitors can browse through the category, select a product, and view more product details.
Infos
If you're not yet familiar with the topic of grouping products into categories, we recommend to first read through the articles Add automatic categories and Add manual categories.
If you would like to only display specific products, you might want to have a look at the article Highlight products with a product slider.
In this article, we'll walk you through the two available options to add a category to a page.
Skip to:
- Add a category on page setup
- Add a category via the content element Category
- Adjust the product image size
- Change the default sorting of the products
Add a category on page setup
When adding a new page in the Editor, you can directly add a category to this page during the page setup. This is how it works:
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Editor.
- In the sidebar of the Editor, select Add page.
- Configure the page according to your requirements. The article Add a new page might help you with that.
- Under Category, select the checkbox Display products.
- From the dropdown menu, select the category you would like to display.
- Select Save.
The page has been added and displays all published products included in the selected category. If the category includes draft products, these will only be displayed on the page once you publish them.
Optionally, you can now change the look of the category by adjusting the product image size or changing the default sorting of the included products.
Add a category via the content element Category
Using the content element Category, you can add a category to an existing page. That's how you do it:
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Editor.
- In the sidebar of the Editor, select Content elements.
- Select Products.
- Drag the content element Category to the page on the right and drop it into one of the blue highlighted areas.
Note
You can only add one category per page. - Select Add category.
- From the dropdown menu, select the category you would like to display.
- Select Save.
The respective page on your website now displays all published products included in the selected category. If the category includes draft products, these will only be displayed on the page once you publish them.
Optionally, you can now change the look of the category by adjusting the product image size or changing the default sorting of the included products.
Adjust the product image size
Once you've added a category to a page (either on page setup or via the respective content element), you can change the look of this category and define how many products should be displayed in one row. That's how you do it:
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Editor.
- In the Editor, navigate to the page displaying the category for which you would like to adjust the product image size.
- Select the category or hover over it with your mouse. You will then see the following symbol at the top of the category:
- Select .
- Select the tab .
- Select your desired product image size. You can choose between three different sizes:
- S (Small)
- M (Medium)
- L (Large)
A preview of the category element with the currently selected product image size is immediately visible on the page in the background. - Select Save.
The size of the product images has been adjusted.
Note
Depending on the device your visitors are using (e.g. smartphone or laptop), the number of images displayed per row may vary slightly. This allows a responsive design of your website and ensures that the different product images look nicely on the different devices and screen sizes.Change the default sort of the products
You can change the default sort of the products displayed in a category, for example if you would like to promote on sale products. This is how:
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Products > Categories.
- Select the category from the list, for which you would like to change the default sort of the products.
- Scroll down to the card Products of this category. The products on this card are displayed in the same order as they will be displayed on your website.
Info
If you assigned the products of the category automatically, you can change the default sort of the products by selecting your desired logic in the dropdown menu Default sort on website. If you assigned the products manually, you can change the default sort of the products by selecting next to a product and dragging it to the desired position. - Select Save.
If your visitors now open a page displaying the respective category, the included products are initially sorted according to your settings. Still, your visitors can change the order by selecting a different logic at the top of the category in the Sort by dropdown menu.
Would you like to learn more about the order of your products after having selected a specific logic? Here's some background information that might help to understand the order in which your products are displayed:
- Newest products first lists the products based on their creation date (descending).
- The order for Price (low to high) and Price (high to low) is based on the price of the product (the sale price, if set, otherwise the regular price). If two or more products share the same price, these products will be sorted based on their creation date (descending). If the variations of a variation product have different price settings, the lowest price is taken into account.
- On sale products first shows all products at the beginning of the category for which you have set a sale price. If at least one variation of a variation product has a sale price, the variation product will be treated as an On sale product. Besides the separation into On sale products and Not on sale products, the products in the category are sorted based on their creation date (descending).
- In stock products first shows all products at the beginning of the category for which you haven't set up stock level tracking or that are in stock according to the stock level tracking. Afterwards, you will see all products displayed as low stock according to your stock level settings. At the end of the category, you will see all products that are out of stock. If two or more products share the same stock level class, these products will be sorted based on their creation date (descending). If the variations of a variation product are part of different stock level classes, the highest stock level category is taken into account.
- For manual categories, the default option your visitors will see in the Sort by dropdown at the top of the category on your website is called Featured Products. This option represents the order you have determined in the cockpit. For automatic categories, this option is not available to your visitors.
