Discounts and savings can motivate potential customers to make a purchase. You can offer such discounts with marketing coupons, for example, by setting up a coupon campaign that offers a 10 Euro discount and sending the respective coupon code to all customers that signed up for your newsletter. You could also start a summer sale campaign that offers a 25% discount on your entire product range. This article explains how to set up a coupon campaign and how to determine the conditions for the coupons that are part of the campaign.

Add a campaign
The conditions for a coupon are set in the respective campaign. Here, you can determine the discount type, the discount value, the validity period, and the coupon code that customers will need to enter at checkout. Here's how:
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Marketing > Coupon campaigns.
- On the top right, select Add campaign.
- Now, you need to determine the campaign basics and conditions:
- The name of the campaign (1), for example, Newsletter. It has to be unique across all campaigns in your cockpit. The name will be displayed to your customers, for example, after the redemption of a coupon in the checkout or on order documents.
- The discount type (2) of the coupon campaign. The default type is Percentage, but you can also select the type Fixed amount from the dropdown menu. Depending on your selected discount type, you can either enter a percentage or a fixed amount in the Discount input field (3).
- The discount (3) that is applied to the subtotal of a cart once a customer enters the coupon code in the checkout. The discount is applied to all items added to the cart but not to the shipping costs. If you've set a minimum order value, the discount will not be taken into account to meet the minimum order value. Here's an example: Imagine you've set a minimum order value of 50 Euro. If customers have items worth 50 Euro in their cart and then redeem a 10% discount code, their order can still be placed.
- Optionally, you can also set a minimum cart value (4) that customers will have to reach in order to be able to redeem the coupon. If they try to redeem the coupon for a cart with a lower cart value, they will see a notification informing them that they will need to increase the value of goods to the defined cart value to redeem the coupon.
- The coupon code (5) that customers need to enter during checkout in order to redeem the coupon, for example, NEWSLETTER2021. The code is case insensitive, meaning that customers who enter Newsletter2021 will also get the discount. Furthermore, customers can only redeem one coupon code per order.
Currently, you can only determine one coupon code per campaign. The coupon code must not contain white spaces and needs to be unique. Meaning, you cannot use the same code for different campaigns. - Optionally, you can also limit the number of redeemable coupons (6) to a fixed amount. By setting this amount to, for example, 100, the coupon code can only be redeemed in 100 orders. Afterwards, the coupon code will be invalid and customers cannot redeem it anymore.
- You can also set the validity period (7) of the campaign. Every coupon campaign must have a start date. If you do not define a specific start date, it will default to the current date and time. Before the start date, your customers cannot redeem a coupon of the campaign. Optionally, you can also set an expiration date. If you do so, customers will not be able to redeem a coupon of the campaign after that date. Otherwise, coupons can be redeemed until you pause or delete the campaign, or the maximum number of redeemable coupons is reached.
- Select Save or Save as draft.
You've just added a coupon campaign.
Depending on your determined conditions, your customers might now be able to redeem related coupons. If the start date is still to come, the status of your coupon campaign is planned and customers cannot redeem coupons yet. As soon as the start date is reached, the status of the coupon campaign is changed to active and customers can redeem coupons.
If you've set an end date and that date is reached, the status of the campaign will automatically change to expired and customers will not be able to redeem coupons anymore. If you've limited the number of redeemable coupons and that limit is reached, the status of your campaign will change to fully redeemed.
If you've decided to save the campaign as draft, the status will be draft, regardless of your determined start and end date. Customers won't be able to redeem coupons as long as you don't save the campaign.
You can always go back and edit your conditions by selecting the respective campaign in the Campaign overview.
Note
If you make changes to an active campaign, it is recommended to inform your customers about the changes.Get an overview of a campaign and the campaign conditions
The conditions you've set for your campaign are important for your customers as they should know the details of the coupon you're offering to them. In several countries, informing your customers about specific coupon conditions is even legally required. In order to support you with that, you'll find a Summary card on each campaign details view. This card includes relevant details and it's automatically updated once you change the conditions of the campaign.
Furthermore, you'll see an Info card right above the Summary card. This card includes an overview of the information that is relevant for you as a merchant: the status of the campaign and the amount of coupons that have been redeemed. Your campaign can have one of the following statuses: draft, planned, active, paused, fully redeemed, or expired. Additionally, you can select View orders to open an overview of all orders that include a coupon of the respective coupon campaign.
Pause a campaign
You can pause active campaigns at any time.
Here's what you'll need to do:
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Marketing > Coupon campaigns.
- Select the campaign you would like to pause from the Campaign overview.
- On the Basics card, select the Pause campaign toggle.
- Select Save.
Your campaign is now paused. Thus, customers cannot redeem coupons that belong to that coupon campaign.
Note
You can only pause active campaigns. If the coupon campaign has a different status, for example, planned or expired, the Pause campaign toggle is not visible. If you pause a campaign, make sure that this action is covered by the redemption conditions that are known to your customers.
If you would like to activate the campaign again, follow the exact same steps that are required to pause the campaign.
Delete a campaign
Your campaign will have the status expired, once the validity period you've set is over. Nevertheless, it will still be visible in the list on your Campaign overview. That way, you can always edit the validity period and thus activate the campaign again, or include this campaign in your campaign evaluations. If you don't need the campaign anymore, you can delete it like this:
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Marketing > Coupon campaigns.
- Select the campaign you would like to delete from the Campaign overview.
- Select Delete campaign in the lower left corner of the page.
The campaign has been deleted. Related coupons cannot be redeemed anymore.
Identify orders with coupons
You would like to know in which orders a coupon was redeemed? You can easily figure that out by having a look at the Order overview in your cockpit. Orders that include a coupon are marked with next to the total amount.
Furthermore, you can filter the orders by specific coupon campaigns. If you select an order that includes a coupon, you'll find more information on the Order details card:
Besides the information you'll find on the campaign's Info card, this information might be helpful for you to analyze and evaluate your coupon campaign.
Use a coupon in an order
Your customers can enter their coupon code in the cart if you have at least one active campaign. Otherwise, the input field is not visible to your customers in the cart.
If customers enter a coupon code that doesn't exist, is expired, fully redeemed or paused, or that belongs to a campaign that hasn't yet started, they will be shown a message informing them that the entered coupon code is invalid.
