Would you like to offer products that can be personalized, for example products that can be engraved with a name or clothing with custom prints? For products like this, you can enable a customization option. This option allows you to display a text field on the product page where customers can enter a customization request.
Enable customization for a product
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Products.
- From the Product overview, select an existing product or add a new one.
- Scroll down to the card Customization.
- Activate the toggle Offer customization option. The card expands, showing the customization settings you can define.
Note
Note that when the customization option is enabled, a product cannot be added to the cart before the customer has filled out the text field. If you want to offer a product that can be customized, but does not have to be, you should create two individual products: One with customization enabled and one with customization disabled. This way you can, for example, also adjust the price if you want to sell the customized product at a higher price. - In the field Custom text headline, you can change the headline that is displayed to your customers above the customization option (max. 35 characters). If you don’t make any changes, the default headline “Add customization” will be displayed.
Note
The headline will be displayed with an additional colon when a customizable product is added to the cart. Any punctuation you add at the end of the headline will be displayed alongside that colon. - In the field Character limit, set the maximum length of text your customers can enter for this product. This may depend on the size of the product, for example, if there is limited space to engrave a text of their choice.
- Select Save.
You have enabled the customization option for the product.
If you decide to no longer offer customization for a product, deactivate the toggle Offer customization option and save your changes. You can re-activate the toggle at any time, but your customization settings will not be saved.
Note
With an enabled customization option, a „CUSTOMIZABLE“ label will also be added to all of the product’s images on your website. If you do not want to display this label, scroll to the Labels card and deactivate the checkbox Add „CUSTOMIZABLE“ label. How you can use the customization option
To give you an idea how the customization option can be used, here are some examples:
Custom text on the product
This is the most obvious use case for the customization option and can be used for products that can be engraved, written or printed on, for example glass, wooden, leather, textile or paper goods. Let’s look at an example:
Let’s say we have followed the steps above and enabled customization for a wine glass we are selling on our website. In the field Custom text headline, we have added the headline “Your engraving”. As there is limited space on the glass, we have set the character limit to 50. Here is what our customers will see:
Our customers will have to enter a custom text with up to 50 characters in the field “Your engraving” before being able to add this product to the cart.
Custom text for variation products
If you want to offer customization for products that are available in different variations, for example if customers can choose different colors or material, it is recommended to add the product as a variation product. The customization option will then be shown together with the dropdown menu(s) for the different variations.
If we offer both plastic and stainless steel corkscrews in matte and shiny with a custom engraving, it could look like this for our customers:
Here, we have enabled the customization option on the variation product “Corkscrew”. We have added the headline “Add your custom engraving” to the field Custom text headline and set the character limit to 50 characters, as the corkscrews do not have a lot of space for text.
Custom text for customer wishes
Another option to use this field is to let your customers enter their wishes for the product. This can be applied, for example, to products that are sold as a custom set or for gift boxes.
As an example, let’s say we offer gift boxes for wine lovers, meaning we allow customers to select one or several bottles of wine and/or accessories like corkscrews, wine glasses, coolers, etc. to be wrapped into a gift box. We have added the headline “Items to be added to the gift box” in the field Custom text headline and have set a character limit of 150 characters, as our gift boxes are not that big and we do not want customers to add too many different items.
This is what it looks like for our customers:
