A Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) is an article or item number that uniquely identifies the product. It can contain any text string of letters of alphabet or numbers.
It is often falsely assumed that the SKU refers to the stock level of a product. But that is not the case. Let's say, the SKU is a more flexible and readable article number that uniquely belongs to just one product.
Example: the SKU for a bottle of red wine could be RED-WINE-001, and this way it would be more readable and comprehensible than just a sequence of numbers.
Note
The field SKU is a mandatory field and must always be filled. Furthermore, an SKU has to be unique within your product range. Note that the SKU is printed on order documents and is thus visible to your customers. How to use SKUs with products without variations
When adding a product to your product range, you can decide whether the SKU should be generated automatically, or whether you want to set your own.
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Products.
- On the top right, select Add product.
- Scroll down to the card Inventory tracking.
- You can now enter your own SKU in the field SKU.
Note
If you leave the field SKU blank, the system automatically generates an SKU when you save the product as a draft or publish it.
Remember that the Name and Price fields must be filled when creating a new product. - Next to the Save button on the top right, select Draft (if you would like to save the product as a draft) or Published (if you would like to publish the product) from the dropdown menu.
- Select Save.
You can edit the SKU (also automatically generated ones) at any time.
How to use SKUs with variation products
When creating a variation product, the SKUs of the single variations of the variation product are generated automatically. You can edit this SKU at any time.
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Products.
- From the Product overview, select the variation product for whose variations you'd like to edit the SKUs.
- Scroll down to the card Inventory tracking.
- In the column SKU, you can now edit the SKU per variation. To do so, enter the desired SKU for a variation in the respective row of the column SKU.
- Next to the Save button on the top right, select Draft (if you would like to save the product as a draft) or Published (if you would like to publish the product) from the dropdown menu.
- Select Save.
