If you'd like to sell a product that comes in more than one variation, such as size or color, you need to create a variation product. In this article we'll walk you through the steps of adding a variation product to your product range.
Info
In case you would like to get some more background knowledge about the idea behind variation products first, we recommend you to read the article "Learn about variation products".Skip to:
Add a variation product
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Products.
- On the top right, select Add variation product.
- You'll be asked to add the attributes and corresponding values for the variation product. Optionally, you can also add the product name:
- In the field Product name (1), you can optionally enter the name of your variation product, e.g. T-Shirt with flower print. If you do not want to enter a name yet, you can also add it in a later step.
- In the field Attribute (2) enter a term that describes a characteristic of the variation product, e.g. Color.
- In the field Values (3) enter the available options, e.g. green, blue, red. Just type the name of the required value and select Add in the prompt.
- If your variation product has another attribute, select Add attribute (4) and enter the additional attribute (e.g. Size) with the corresponding values (e.g. S, M, L, XL). Each variation product can have 3 attributes and up to 150 variations (meaning 150 possible combinations of attributes and values).
- While you enter your attributes and values, the counters (5) change accordingly, and you can keep track of how much you can still add.
- You also have the option to delete an attribute with its values (6).
- When you're done with your entries, select OK.
Your variation product is now created as a draft but it's not yet saved.
Note
You're done with the first step of creating a variation product by setting attributes and values. In order to complete the variation product and publish it on your website, you need to follow the instructions in the next section Edit the variation product.Edit the variation product
After successfully taking the first step of creating a variation product, your variation product is still in the making. The variation product has been created as a draft and requires further settings. Just as with a product, you need to enter the relevant details. At least the fields Name and Price are required to save the variation product as a draft or publish it. Our article Add products will help you with that.
Examples? Examples!
Imagine we sell corkscrews that differ in material and color. We would need to add the attributes color and material and then assign values. So the first thing we do is to enter Color in the Attribute field and then separately enter, for example, matte and shiny in the Values field. Next, we select Add attribute and then enter Material as a new attribute for our corkscrew. Afterwards we assign the values plastic and stainless steel.
As soon as all attributes and values are set, we can see from the counter that we added 2 (of 3 possible) attributes and 4 (of 150 possible) variations:
Info
Upon selecting OK, the variations (Corkscrew, plastic, matte | Corkscrew, plastic, shiny | Corkscrew, stainless steel, matte | Corkscrew stainless steel, shiny) will be generated by the software, (see also the images in the section in the cockpit).Next, we select OK, and we're prompted to a product detail page, where we fill in all the relevant fields that are required for our variation product, for example the price.
That's it! Next to the Save button on the top right, we select Draft (if we would like to save the product as a draft) or Published (if we would like to publish the product) from the dropdown menu and save our changes.
This is how it looks
