Imagine you would like to buy a new printer. Just when you've decided for a printer, you see the matching printer ink and high-quality printer paper. Would you be wondering if you should additionally order these products to ensure amazing printing results? Probably.
Cross-selling is exactly about that. You can display complementary or alternative products to your visitors in order to encourage them to buy more and thus drive your sales. In this article, you will learn how to add cross-selling options for your products.

Types of cross-selling
You can use cross-selling in several ways. In the printer example mentioned in the introduction, the cross-selling included related accessories. You could also display products that are required for a proper use but that are not included in the main product, for example batteries or cables. When selling wine, you could also promote wine similar to the one your visitor is currently looking at, as they will probably be in favor of the region or taste and thus end up ordering more than one wine.
Another option you have is to display alternative products. This type of cross-selling is particularly interesting as you are not encouraging the visitor to purchase additional products. You rather promote products that the visitor should purchase instead. Since alternative products are often more expensive than the original product, this marketing method is also called up-selling. However, alternative products do not necessarily have to be more expensive – you can also advertise products with a higher profit margin or products that you want to sell as quickly as possible.
How to add cross-selling for a product
- In the sidebar of your cockpit, select Products.
- Select the product for which you would like to add cross-selling.
Note
If you set up cross-selling for a variation product, all variations of the variation product will share the same cross-selling options. - Scroll down to the card Cross-selling.
- Activate the toggle Show cross-selling options for this product.
- Set up the cross-selling according to your needs. You will have the following options:
-
Headline shown on your website
Here you can change the headline that will be shown on your website above the cross-selling options for your product. By default, the headline is "You may also like". Depending on your use case, you can, for example, change the headline to "More Tuscan red wines" or "Complete the look". -
Assign products
In this section, you can determine the products that should be displayed as cross-selling options for your product. By default, all products of your product range (published ones and drafts) are assigned. If you would like to show certain products only, you can either assign these products automatically or manually.Note
You can only assign products and variation products as cross-selling options, not the single variations of a variation product.
You can also assign products with the status draft. However, these products only show up as cross-selling options to your visitors after you have published them. -
Assigned products
Here, you can see all products that you've assigned as cross-selling options for your product. The list is automatically updated whenever you make changes in the section Assign products.
The products are displayed in the same order as they will be displayed as cross-selling options on your website. If you assigned the products automatically, you can change the order of the products by selecting your desired sorting logic in the dropdown menu Define product sorting on website. If you assigned the products manually, you can change the order of the products by selectingnext to a product and dragging it to the desired position.

Headline shown on your website
- Once you've set up cross-selling, select Save.
The assigned and already published products are now displayed as cross-selling options on the product detail page of your product. Here's an example of how it could look like:
How to assign products automatically
When assigning products automatically, you can use tags to determine the products that should be displayed as cross-selling options.
Info
If you are not yet familiar with tags, we recommend to first read through the article "Discover tags" and to add relevant tags to your product range. That's what you need to do:
- In the section Assign products, be sure to select Automatically.
- In the input field Tags, define the tags the products included in the cross-selling should be labeled with. When selecting the input field, a list with all available tags will be displayed. If you start typing, the list will automatically be updated in order to show the tags that match your entries. You can add as many tags as you like, but you can only choose tags that you've already added to a product.
- Once you've added your tags, you can define whether the products need to match all or at least one of the defined tags. Select your desired option.
The products matching your settings are immediately displayed in the section Assigned products. If you add the defined tags to a product later on, this product will be automatically added to the list of cross-selling options.
How to assign products manually
If you would like to display specific products as cross-selling options, you can manually assign these products. That's what you need to do:
- In the section Assign products, select Manually.
- Select the input field Select products. You can now search products by product name or SKU.
- Select the desired products from the list.
Once you've selected a product, it is displayed in the section Assigned products. If you accidentally added a product, you can selectnext to the product to remove it from the list.
How to deactivate cross-selling for a product
You can remove cross-selling for a product at any time by deactivating the toggle Show cross-selling options for this product at the very bottom of the card Cross-selling.
But be aware that your cross-selling settings will be deleted when deactivating the toggle. If you activate the toggle again, you will also have to define the products that should be displayed as cross-selling options again.
